Councillor jokes about bypass while opening medieval festival

A Hereford Councillor made a playful jibe at progress on the Hereford Western Bypass at the Hereford Medieval Festival held at Hereford Cathedral.Kevin Tillett, councillor for Hinton and Hunderton, said: "Merry, merry citizens of Hereford, your struggle has not gone unnoticed. The roads are uneven, the people are drunken, and many times me chariot was blocked," he said after the procession had entered the cathedral grounds."I have decided to raise your taxes in order to build a bypass"It will never happen, jeered the crowd."I remind Hereford's citizens that they have just cheered for a tax increase to fund a bypass.""Before the end of my reign you shall have a bypass".He then opened the festival, which will run until August 16, and so began Medieval combat showcases, archery shootouts, Punch and Judy shows, and embroidery workshops, among other activities. The Councillor's joke references Herefordshire Council's controversial large infrastructure project, the construction of the Hereford Western Bypass to connect the A49 and A465, thereby easing traffic flow in the city centre. The plans to build the bypass have been widely debated. With some arguing that it is not worth taxpayer money, some saying that it is in the wrong location, and others contending that it will cause environmental damage.Grandmother Jean Harris, 79, refused to sell part of her garden between Clehonger and Belmont to allow construction to go ahead, making international headlines. The Council issued a statement saying that "The council’s preference is always to reach voluntary agreements with landowners wherever possible."However, we remain confident that sufficient land will be in place for construction to begin later this year."The project is expected to begin construction in December, and the first phase is slated to be completed by 2028.
